Small acts of kindness 2020

It is amazing what a small act of Kindness does to someone. I now know because I received, just that in my neighborhood grocery store on New Year’s Day.  I was standing in line when I felt a gentle tap on my shoulder. I turned around.

A smiling thirtyish young lady said,

“Hi. I want to pay for your groceries.”

The clerk nodded.

I grabbed and hugged my benefactor and in my surprise all I could say was “thanks” and a promise to pass this act of kindness forward.

The issue was not that I could or could not pay for my own groceries or that I deserved or did not deserve such kindness.

For that moment, I felt something good had broken through all the mean- spirited and evil acts  permeating the airwaves and was touching me. For that moment, I felt tagged, selected, like I felt in elementary school when the teacher called my name as an A student or in the childish games, we played “You’re it.”  I was the “it”, the one God chose to send someone to be kind to.  I can say that because as a regular church goer I know that the best Sermons are not always preached from pulpits but through acts of kindness, both large and small.

So, in thinking about this lady—who was about half my age—I left that supermarket feeling that in some way Jesus, Himself, had tagged me to show through a small act of kindness his love.

What a joyful feeling which I am going to enjoy passing forward.
